In Memoriam

Caroline S. Wagner (1955–2026)

It is with profound sadness that the International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics (ISSI) marks the passing of Caroline S. Wagner, an outstanding scholar, esteemed colleague, and dedicated member of the ISSI Board.

Caroline was internationally recognized for her pioneering contributions to the science of science, innovation studies, and research policy. Her influential work on the dynamics of international scientific collaboration transformed our understanding of how research communities emerge and evolve across national boundaries. Through her publications, including The New Invisible College, and her engagement with both the academic and policy communities, she helped establish collaboration as a central topic in scientometric research and inspired scholars worldwide.

As a member of the ISSI Board, Caroline brought wisdom, generosity, and a truly global perspective to our deliberations. She was deeply committed to advancing the Society's mission and strengthening the international scientometric community. Her thoughtful contributions, balanced judgment, and collegial spirit enriched our discussions and our decisions.

Many of us will remember Caroline not only for her scholarship but also for her warmth and openness. Whether at Board meetings, ISSI conferences, or in conversations with colleagues, she had a remarkable ability to listen carefully, encourage others, and foster meaningful dialogue. She combined intellectual curiosity with humility and kindness, making her a valued collaborator and friend to many in our community.

On behalf of the ISSI Board and the entire ISSI community, we extend our deepest condolences to Caroline's family, friends, colleagues, and former students. Her legacy will live on through her influential scholarship, the researchers she mentored, and the international collaborations she helped to foster.

Caroline will be deeply missed. We remember her with gratitude for her many contributions to our field and to our Society, and with admiration for the generosity, integrity, and vision that characterized both her professional and personal life.
